Think Nutrition
What is Nutrition?
Nutrition is the process of breaking down food and substances to use for energy
in the body. Nutrition is also the building blocks of life.
The essential nutrients include carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, as well as fiber,
vitamins, minerals, and water-the solvent for all soluble ingredients in the blood
and cells.
Good nutrition is nothing but getting the right amount of nutrients from foods in
the right combinations, to help sustain the growth of the body. The right choice
in food gives you good health over your lifetime, and is also a key factor in avoiding
obesity, illness, and many of today's most prevalent chronic diseases.
Proper nutrition helps you develop and maintain good health.

WHAT CONSTITUTES WELLBEING?
Wellbeing refers to a state of contentment that comes from living a wholesome life
sustained by positive habits. To feel a sense of wellbeing, one should focus on
living a meaningful and purpose-driven life that makes the optimum use of one's
potential. Most of us believe that the factors that ensure our wellbeing exist in
the outside environment. However, the truth is that each of us carries the seed
of wellbeing within us and it is up to us to nourish and develop it into a consistent
state.
The following factors broadly define our state of wellbeing:
Good health
Good health signifies wellbeing at all levels - physical, mental, and social. Good
health can be achieved through adequate nutrition, exercise, rest, relaxation, and
spiritual practices.
Material needs
One can ensure good health by having adequate financial means to take care of one's
basic needs such as food, water, clothing, shelter, etc.
Security
One needs adequate protection from social ills such as violence, crime, wars, and
natural and man-made disasters to maintain peace of mind and a healthy state.
Social relations
Man is a social animal. Our wellbeing is dependent to a large extent on positive
social interactions based on mutual respect, with family, friends, relations, and
others.
Eight ways to ensure wellbeing:
- Know your life's purpose and your values, and stick by them.
- Define what success means to you.
- Don't fear change; rather, welcome it and be aware of your options.
- Know your strengths.
- Don't hesitate to ask for help from people you trust.
- Understand that you cannot control every situation.
- Embrace responsibility.
- Inculcate positive habits such as ensuring adequate nutrition and exercise, as well
as laughing as often as possible, to make your life more satisfying and enjoyable.
WHAT CONSTITUTES GOOD HEALTH?
Nutrition
In today's fast-paced and hectic life, we are always looking for comfort foods that
are convenient to get as well as give us temporary bliss. However, this is a poor
choice for physical as well as mental health in the long run. Make a conscious choice
today to replace all your junk foods with nutritious ones. Consult a dietician about
your daily nutritional intake.
Exercise
Indulge in physical activities you enjoy, such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling,
trekking, hiking, yoga, sports, etc., every day. This helps you to maintain strength
in your muscles, lose weight, and reduce stress.
Rest and relaxation
It is very important to ensure regular sleep patterns and get 7 - 8 hours of sound
sleep every night. This will help your body to repair and renew itself and prevent
premature aging, chronic tiredness, constant irritation, depression, and anxiety,
which are all symptoms of sleep deprivation.
Develop hobbies or interests that engage you in a productive manner, as these will
help you to relax and feel rejuvenated. Getting to work with a fresh mind is very
important.
Quit smoking and drinking
Your body is subjected to extensive internal damage by sustained consumption of
tobacco and alcohol. Though certain types of alcohol, e.g., red wine, are good for
the heart when consumed in small quantities, in general, alcohol and cigarettes
harm your vital organs. Smoking can also impact the health of those around you.
Overall, it is better to abstain from these habits.
Spiritual practices
Being spiritual makes you reflect on the bigger picture and helps you look beyond
the petty irritations and distractions of everyday life. Over time, regular spiritual
practices can help you experience sustained peace of mind and maintain equanimity
while facing life's challenges.
